I finally had the opportunity to watch the film Girlfriend– and it was absolutely riveting. Evan Sneider gives an incredible performance as Evan, a young man looking for love. Amanda Plummer, Shannon Woodward, and Jackson Rathbone round out the cast as Evan’s devoted mother, his love interest Candy, and Candy’s jealous ex-boyfriend.

When a tragic event occurs in Evan’s life, he must learn to cope while attempting to capture the attention and affections of troubled single mother, Candy. The issues reflected are serious and all too real for many young adults with Down syndrome. Certainly of interest to a broad audience, the film’s psychological suspense will keep you glued to your seat.

Girlfriend was written and directed by Justin Lerner, a childhood classmate of Sneider’s. Themes are universal, including love, loss, pain, isolation, and coming of age. Parents of children with Down syndrome will relate to the fear of sending their child into a world that can be cruel and unfair to an individual who just longs to be accepted and loved. However, seeing all that actor Evan Sneider has accomplished is truly an inspiration. His performance in this film is one to be remembered.
